Approximately
46 years to the day after a riot at New York's Stonewall Inn ushered in the modern gay
rights movement, Justice Anthony Kennedy’s decision (in the 5 liberal justices
- 4 conservative justices ruling) recognizing gay marriage puts an end to homosexuals yearning on marriage rights,
while it gives deep disappointment to non-advocates.
Married same-sex couples will now enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples and will be recognized on official documents
such as birth and death certificates.
The
U.S. Supreme Court declares same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states. Many
are in favor of it, while others disagree.
With this decision of the court, let’s try to find out its pros and
cons:
5
Pros of Same Sex Matrimony
1.
Marital Benefits
Married
couples are offered quite a few benefits from the government, which is a huge
factor for many people to decide to enter matrimony. Few of them include tax breaks, insurance benefits, and power of attorney for
their partner. With legalization of gay marriage, these same benefits would be
provided to them.
2. Children’s Entitlements
Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) couples make the decision to adopt children, or taking it into
consideration by other means while in partnership. If parented by an unmarried couple, these
children are not protected in the same manner as children of married couples.
Unless they are given the privilege of being married, privileges like custody,
child support, and visitation rights are all very foggy when it comes to gay
couples.
3. Celebration of Love
Marriage
offers gaiety to two people being in love who are committing to each other. Gay
couples that do not have this marital right feel as though their relationship
is not as significant and doesn’t deserve to be rejoiced. Making gay marriage
legal changes this allowing them to publicly celebrate their love for each
other.
4.
Religiously Fueled
The
Christian faith decrees that a man on man, or woman on woman, relationship is
off beam in the eyes of God, and that permitting them to marriage is making a
further “joke” of the system of marriage. Nevertheless, the United State was
created on the foundation of religious freedoms, so this dispute does not bend
the decision of laws permitting gay marriage.
5.
Makes Them Feel inferior
Rejecting
same sex partners the right to get married denounces lesbian and gay families
as lesser and conveys the meaning which it is all right to show prejudice or
categorize against them.
4
Cons of Same Sex matrimony
1.
Increased Taxes
To
compensate this new demographic of people taking advantage of the tax benefits
that marriage offers, income taxes would very possibly increase. This perturbs
many people because they feel that they should not have to pay for what they
deem as flawed.
2.
Social Security Increase
Social
security taxes that are withheld from pay checks would likewise increase. This
is because of the additional money that would be required in order to provide
benefits to widowers of same sex marriages.
3. Priority Adoptions
Gay marriage that’s legal at a federal level gives couples the priority in adoption situations because of their
evident inability to procreate, which may cause quite a bit of rancour between
gay couples and heterosexual couples who are also trying as surrogate parents.
4.
Breaks the rights of Churches
A
federal law legalizing gay marriage would eventually compel churches across the
nation to execute these ceremonies, which goes against the churches beliefs,
but they would be duty-bound because of discrimination laws protecting the gay
couples.
Different
personalities express their divided standpoint in this ruling. Justice Antonin
Scalia for example blasted the Court's "threat to American
democracy." Truly, it’s a menace as
it denies the perpetuation of the human race and the raising of children, it
violates natural law engraved on the human heart (Romans 2:14-15), it always denies a child either a father or a mother who has no blood
relationship with him/her and deprived of either a mother or a father role
model, it validates and promotes the homosexual lifestyle, it twists a moral
wrong into a civil right, it enforces its acceptance on all society, it Is the
cutting edge of the sexual revolution
(the gay movement is not a civil rights movement, not even a sexual
liberation movement either, but a moral revolution designed at changing
people's view of homosexuality), and
therefore it offends God law (Genesis 1:28-29).
