Like
the presidential candidates (except Miriam Santiago), none of the 2016 vice
presidential candidates actively supports the legalization of divorce.[1]
In
2008, a divorce bill went as far as 3rd reading in the Senate. Senators Alan
Peter Cayetano, Francis Escudero, Gringo Honasan, Migz Zubiri, Jamby Madrigal,
and Loren Legarda voted against it.
Instead
of legalizing divorce, Cayetano proposes reinforcing the country's annulment
process. He also believes that gender inequality must first be dealt with before
pushing for divorce, taking into consideration that women will be at the losing
end. Conversely, Senator Pia Cayetano his sister explicitly supports divorce.
Davao
City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte also opposes the idea saying that divorce will only cause
a lasting "harm" on the family, particularly children.
Escudero,
instead of divorce pushes for the adoption of a more accessible and affordable
annulment process. Before he remarried, he himself got an annulment after a
10-year marriage. Not all Filipinos, however, can afford it which is complex, expensive,
and tedious, not to mention the limited grounds (psychological incapacity is
the most common ground).
Senator
Grace Poe is also against divorce. She wants to first fix the annulment system
before plunging into divorce.
Camarines
Sur Representative Leni Robredo believes to first look into relaxing the
process of annulment and makes it more accessible to the poor and the
marginalized. She also supported physical and emotional abuse as grounds for
annulment.
Honasan
believes that divorce destroys the "sanctity" of marriage. For him, responsible
parenthood is significant. Parents should know whereabouts of their kids, the
people whom they mingle with, and their actions. Sanctity of marriage and
family life must be preserved, he added.
Binay,
is silent on the issue.
Antonio
Trillanes IV worries that divorce has "negative affects" on children,
saying that it pushes the society into an issue that's very conflict-ridden. At
the University of Asia and the Pacific, he said that parents sacrifice their
own happiness for the sake of the kids. That it is unnecessary because the
Philippines already has legal separation.
Bongbong'Marcos
gets more personal with his opposition on divorce, saying that he loves his
wife and do not want to divorce her.
Senator
Santiago favors divorce on the basis of two grounds: an attempt on the life of
the spouse by the other, and when one spouse is already living with another
person (adultery or concubinage). Other
than these, she says that it might play down the institution of marriage –
young people might do too quickly into this especially the young ones, and then
change their minds and get a divorce.
