“Cebu Born-Again Christian Edwin Canonigo Opens Up About His Vicious Cycle of Cherry-Picking Bible Teachings on Authority”

🕊️ 👑✨ Vivat Jesus!

Whether laypeople or born-again Christians have the authority to teach the Bible depends heavily on the denominational tradition and how authority is defined (formal office versus informal sharing or the "priesthood of all believers").

Views on Authority to Teach

1. No (Formal or Official Teaching Authority)

Catholic and Orthodox Tradition: Official teaching authority (the Magisterium) belongs exclusively to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter (the Pope), traced historically through apostolic succession.

Laypeople do not possess the sacramental ordination or institutional mandate required to formally teach or interpret doctrine authoritatively for the universal Church.

Confessional/Reformed & Traditional Views: Formal pastoral teaching (such as serving as an overseer, elder, or official preacher in a local church) requires specific spiritual qualifications, calling, and ordination (such as the criteria outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 on qualifications of Ministers).

Unchecked or unauthorized teaching risks introducing private or false interpretations that can mislead the congregation.

2. Yes (Informal Sharing and the "Priesthood of All Believers")

Protestant / Evangelical Tradition: Many Protestant traditions emphasize the priesthood of all believers, meaning every born-again Christian has direct access to God (which Edwin Canonigo, a born- again from Samoan, Cebu has claimed, who has been into vicious cycle on cherry-picking), can read and interpret Scripture, and is commissioned to share the gospel and disciple others.

Everyday Discipleship: Laypeople and born-again Christians routinely teach in informal settings—such as parenting children, leading small groups, or sharing the gospel with peers—without needing formal clergy status.

However, many of these same traditions still draw a line between informal Christian witness/mentorship and holding the formal church office of pastor or elder.

Why the Distinction Exists

In Favor of Open Authority ("Yes"): All believers are given the Great Commission to make disciples and share what Jesus taught (Matthew 28:19-20).

indwells every believer to help them understand and apply the Word of God - 2 Timothy 3:16

In Favor of Restricted Authority ("No"): Scripture warns strongly against false teachers and unverified or private distortions of the text:   2 Peter 2:1 and James 3:1.

Order, accountability, and specific character/doctrinal qualifications are mandated for those who step into public leadership and governance within a local body.

The five living cardinals of the Philippines are Luis Antonio Tagle, Jose Advincula, Pablo Virgilio David, Orlando Quevedo, and Gaudencio Rosales.

The Five Filipino Cardinals (at least here in the Philippines):

1). Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle: Elevated in 2012, he serves as Pro-Prefect for the Section of Evangelization of the Dicastery for Evangelization at the Vatican and holds the rank of Cardinal-Bishop. He is under 80 years old and eligible to vote in a papal conclave.

2). Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula: Elevated in 2020, he is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Manila.  He is under 80 years old and serves as a cardinal elector.

3). Pablo Virgilio "Ambo" Cardinal David: Elevated in December 2024, he is the Bishop of Kalookan and President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).  He is under 80 years old and serves as a cardinal elector.

4). Orlando Beltran Cardinal Quevedo, O.M.I.: Elevated in 2014, he is the Archbishop Emeritus of Cotabato. He is over 80 years old and is a non-elector.

5). Gaudencio Borbon Cardinal Rosales: Elevated in 2006, he is the Archbishop Emeritus of Manila. He is over 80 years old and is a non-elector.

Cardinals form the College of Cardinal, advise the Pope, and vote in a conclave to elect a new Pope.
