Gender dysphoria is different from transvestism or cross-dressing and is not related to sexual orientation. Individuals with this condition may identify as straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or asexual, which may change through a treatment.
Walt says hundreds of people contact him for advice prior to having a sex change, and on how to deal with their regret afterwards. He claims that every single one of them can trace their need to change back to a childhood issue, and better psychological evaluation would discover that - saving them both money and heartache.
Walt says that he endures dissociative disorder, which interrupts his memories and sense of self-identity. Dissociative disorders disrupt one’s sense of reality and identity.
It can be considered an involuntary defense-mechanism to shield the victim from particular psychological trauma.
Many pre-operative patients need greater help with mental health issues before taking the decision to go ahead. There's a huge element of trust that all of the pre-surgical transgender individuals consign in the hands of the clinicians. They make them go through counselling, but it appears to be more as a rubber stamp because they're looking to approve them. All of them have some level of depression, which are not treated but just cut off body parts and give them a new name and a new gender.
Biologically, no one can transport to the other gender and not even possible. Since they use a guy's penis and just invert it, the guy has not lost it, it is just going the wrong way, he says. Walt Heyer says that no one can really change their gender. He should know, too, because he tried.
The regret can be so severe that post-operative patients end up self harming, and even committing suicide, Walt says.
The Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES) clarifies that gender dysphoria is a condition that needs to be taken more earnestly.
Nowadays, Heyer no longer struggles with his gender identity and uses his testimony to speak out in support of those who have the same struggles and in opposition of those who advocate sex reassignment surgery as gender identity problems solution.
Further, a Swedish study who examined individuals who had sex reassignments between 1973 and 2003 discloses that switching sexes can have a significant negative impact on the individual (higher rates of overall mortality, death from cardiovascular disease and suicide, suicide attempts, and psychiatric hospitalizations) and thereforeis not a good solution to someone's gender identity crisis.
Heyer establishes websites such as Sex Change Regret and True Trans Christians, writes several related books including Trading My Sorrows and, most recently, Paper Genders, which was published in June 2011.
Today Heyer is married again and has found happiness in being the gender that God created him to be.
Another testimonial of transformation can be found in the Philippines. Born as a boy, Gavino "Vins" Santiago had sexual reassignment in the 80's, got married to a British national and thought he was living the life he has always fantasized.
Nevertheless, his relationship with his partner was far from perfect. Meeting God influenced him to accept his natural gender.[3]
Now, he is a pastor of Bagong Ilog Christian Fellowship and has chosen to be a man again.
His desire to be a female started when he altered his gender at the age of 24. Even before his operation, he had worked as an entertainer in a club called Coco Banana, often joined beauty pageants and wore bikini, hiding his male genitals. With the acquired confidence as an entertainer, bringing home the crowns was never too hard for him after a contest.[4]
Typical to a homosexual, he also experienced being bullied and felt loathed at his childhood, sexually molested by his older cousin who eventually became his first love. At this point in his life, the thought of himself being a woman seeded in his young mind, thus, leading him to find satisfaction in developing a female image.
He started engaging in operational changes of his physical appearance in Japan and continued being an entertainer while female features in his body develops. After the successful surgery, he got married with Steve Robinson and settled in England.
Nevertheless, after five years, Vin sadly found himself crying at night with his empty heart, until he viewed a television show 700 Club which was his turning point. With the inclination to find the missing link of his personality, he committed himself to God. He broke up his marriage with Steve but still found purpose by being active in testifying his life-changing story to other people, counselling homosexuals, encouraging them to better flaunt in the open for a better chance of resolving the issue, and above all his faith
His original sex organs has never been restored but does not regret his past decisions claiming that it reminds him of what his life has been which strengthens his faith.
Vin’s life turns to be an inspiration and a living testimony of how changes could shape one’s destiny and continues to make history from being the first Filipino transgender to being the first known transgender who chose to be a male pastor.
OPPOSITION VS. REALITY
While Trustee Terry Reed opposes Walts’ statement concerning insufficient screening prior to surgical operation and claims that it is not something that’s related to abuse or anything else in childhood, pointing to children under school age who change their gender role and are absolutely adamant about who they are, and biological factors like hormonal and genetic which impact on the neurobiology of the brain and are crucially important in the development of gender identities, as examples, this remains a presumption considering the testimonials of the people (aside from the aforementioned) who have been condemning Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) as provided herewith:
Chelsea Attonley/Matthew, 30 years old , who was born a boy and called Matthew, regretted two times, a transsexual who had a £10,000 sex change on the NHS to become a woman who wants the taxpayer to foot the bill for a further £14,000 of surgery to become a man again,[5] asserting that young or old, early in transition or years later, changing genders ends in regret, and often, in a total nightmare. He says that no amount of surgery can give him an actual female body and feels like he is living a lie. He suffered from depression and anxiety as a result of the hormones too.
He realized it would be easier to stop fighting the way he looks naturally and accept that he was born a man physically.
Ria Cooper/Brad, born a male, he is Britain's youngest sex swap patient to detransition, he retracts that it is not "happily ever after" after all the favorable publicity in the US about children "needing" sex change treatment.[6]
He made the decision at age 16-17 to start the transition, and regrets after a year, and decided to change back in to a man after suffering huge mental anguish as a woman.
He confirms the point that the brain hasn't matured enough to make this decision until the person reaches their mid-20s so why encourage any child to undergo "treatments" with such long-term consequences.
Although he underwent a thorough psychological assessment and counselling at Hull Royal Infirmary before the sex change therapy, she has suffered such torment living as a women up to the point of attempting to commit suicide.[7]
He tells that hormones have made him feel up and down. One minute he feels moody and the next minute he feels really happy.
On a final note, as the society accepts and condones the existence of homosexuals, the number of people who undergo sex change continues mushrooming. Common reasons in this alteration is their desire to be accepted, to belong, and to be the person they once wanted to be. Fulfillment and happiness are two expected things felt by transgender people after having what they are desiring for. The Church teaches that they must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided as these individuals like straights men and women are likewise called to fulfill God's will in their lives and to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
