“As for yourself, you must say what is consistent with sound doctrine, namely, that older men should be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, love, and endurance. Similarly, older women should be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to drink, teaching what is good, so that they may train younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, chaste, good homemakers, under the control of their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited.” (Titus 2:1-5)
Evidently
the people are thirsting for a leader who’s a good provider for the country and
its people.
With
the attitude of the voting public both in words and in deeds, on social media,
on tabloids and broadsheets, in public places, on community and corporate
conversations, it has been obvious that the people are already immune of the
political candidates’ stereo-type promises on platform of government, civilized
and educated personalities, finest educational attainment, dignified and
refined physical features, angelic presentation of themselves whose output
towards the end are opposite of everything that is heard and noticed.
“Some
people” now endanger to embrace the opposite traits of the traditional
politicians (decent in words but uncultured in deeds, the new breath of
politics (the womanizer, the killer of criminals, the narcissistic, the uncouth
both on national and international relations) hoping that this unbecoming
character will produce positive output than these decent characters who churn
out disinteresting yield (corruption, injustice, different crimes, economic
defeatism, unemployment) bringing the Philippines to be downtrodden.
Nevertheless,
well mannered political candidates with honest portrayal of her/himself both in
words and in deeds can still be spotted in this generation should anyone
scrutinize each one’s individuality.
Everyone
should be reminded that even in a family-setting, any family member is upset
when witnessing a loved one who is rude, war-freak, violent, or disrespectful
of women because these cause discord, division and unfruitful way of life.
Perhaps
a family or government can be prolific even when it’s blended with a reckless
family member/constituent because others anyway perform their share, but these
careless behaviors are oftentimes the immediate factor that pulls down the
economic stability of the family or the government.
As
this is alarming, that the black becomes white and white becomes black in the
eyes of men, continued dissemination of related information is needed to
caution our brethren - SURVEY.
Survey
is not an entertainment that’s supposed to amuse the public, that would
encourage the voters to go with the flow and support any candidate who’s
leading it, but should be taken as a reminder that this country has been
hoodwinked repeatedly since the ancient times and up to this generation, and as
a symbol admonishing everyone to be cautious in selecting a candidate.
Surveys
that appear in any form of media can be both beneficial and destructive
especially when the negative characters articulated by a specific political
candidate who’s leading the survey entertain the voting public resulting it to
be the talk of the town which people especially those with the same traits
could connect themselves to such a character. It can be beneficial if this is
taken not as a pattern on who are to be voted but as a reminder of names of who
among them are good at promises as a potential threat in the country’s progress
and tranquility and who are genuine at servanthood. The country urgently needs a president who
could flexibly connect flexibly to a drinking session in the streets but not a
president who can spoil an occasional drinker to be chronic
alcohol-dependent.
No
one is perfect and holy from among these political candidates but everyone can
choose aspirants with lesser evil tendencies.
Based
on Radio Veritas 846 survey,[1] a big
difference can be noticed with respect to the leading personalities appeared in
Pulse Asia’s survey (Duterte being the much-favored).[2] It’s interesting to note that this country
has been in chaos not because of the presence of the Catholic Church (which is
also part of the state) but because of these political leaders (both in the
past and present government) who disobey the values taught by the Church
Stewards (being Jesus’ anointed) against dishonesty and avarice which cause the
government to be corrupt and unjust. So
it’s just judicious to look also at the other side of other group’s initiative
on survey for fair expression of autonomy towards a conscientious choice.
Rev.
Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual, Radio Veritas 846 President said that it was conducted
not as popularity survey but to discern if candidates for the coming election
possess qualities of a servant leader based on the points of view of
the voting public and to assess how such qualities would affect voters’
decisions. Radio Veritas is the number
one social communications ministry for truth and evangelization, church-run AM
radio in the Philippines, established in 1969, owned and operated by the
Archdiocese of Manila and the Ramon Magsaysay recipient Catholic radio
station.
Sociologist
Dr. Clifford Sorita of the Research Department conducted the Veritas Truth
Survey on the first quarter (from February to mid-March), taking 1, 200
respondents from urban and rural areas nationwide. Respondents were selected on
the basis of stratified random sampling, with +/- 3% margin of error. The
result of the survey was released on
Wednesday, April 20, 2016.
Provided
below is the comparative survey between Radio Veritas and Pulse Asia:
In
this survey on Servant Leadership qualities of the 2016 presidential candidates
for the coming national polls, they asked respondents to rank the five
presidential candidates based on the ten qualities of a servant leader - listening,
empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight,
stewardship, commitment to the growth of the people, and building community.
These
ten qualities identified by Larry C. Spears (Executive Director of the Robert
K. Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership) as ten characteristics of a
servant-leader in his paper titled “On Character and Servant Leadership: Ten
Characteristics of Effective, Caring Leaders, are adapted from the
servant-leadership theoretical framework first proposed by Robert K. Greenleaf,
who was the founder of the modern Servant leadership movement and the Greenleaf
Center for Servant Leadership.
Senator Grace
Poe
has emerged consistently in the first spot,[3] as
presidential candidate having the qualities of a servant leader after being at
the top spot in 9 out of 10 qualities of a servant leader (listening,
conceptualization, empathy, foresight, persuasion, stewardship, commitment to
growth, building community, and healing)[4] and with an
over-all percentage of 59%. She failed, however, to be recognized of having the
"awareness" quality, defined as having sufficient knowledge and
experience for the position, which reflects the programs that the candidate has
implemented during previous government post.
Senator Miriam
Defensor-Santiago
of the People’s Reform Party has been consistently ranked 2nd in half of the
given traits and had an over-all percentage of 51%.
Mayor Rodrigo
Duterte
of PDP-Laban and former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel Roxas II the
standard bearer (PDP-Laban)tied on the third spot at 44%.
Vice President
Jejomar Binay
of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) ranked last in half of the given
qualities reaping an over-all percentage of 41% of the respondents.
On
listening as the first quality, 3
out of 4 (76.5%) respondents’ top choice was Senator Poe, followed by Secretary
Roxas at 54.3%, Senator Santiago 53.9 percent, Vice President Binay got 50.5%,
while Mayor Duterte received the lowest at 44. 65%.
Speaking
of empathy
as the second quality, a great majority of the respondents (70.8%) said that Senator Poe has it
among the presidential candidates, followed by Vice President Binay at 52.5%,
Mayor Duterte at 46.5%, Secretary Roxas with 45% and Senator Santiago at
40.9%.
Pertaining
to healing
taken as the third quality, half of the respondents (51.1%) preferred
Senator Poe, while Senator Santiago garnered 36%, followed by Secretary Roxas
with 30.3%, Mayor Duterte 29.2% and Vice President Binay with 24.5%.
When
it comes to awareness being the fourth quality, three out of four
respondents (75.1%) favored Senator Santiago, Vice President Binay with 65%,
Secretary Roxas 61.7% hitting the third place, followed by Mayor Duterte at
56.1% and Senator Poe at only 48.7%.
In
terms of persuasion cited as fifth quality, majority of the respondents
(56.4 %) chose Senator Poe, followed by Senator Santiago with 55.%, Mayor
Duterte 42.6%, Secretary Roxas with 39.1% and Vice President Binay with 33.7%.
With
relation to conceptualization as the sixth quality, respondents’ top choice
was Senator Poe with 58.5%, Senator Santiago with 58%, Mayor Duterte at 51.4%, Vice President Binay
with 49.2%, Secretary Roxas gathering less than half of the respondents at
48.3%.
In
the area of foresight as the seventh quality, Senator Poe was also the most
favored at 56.9% of the respondents, Senator Santiago 53.4%, followed by Mayor
Duterte with 51%, Secretary Roxas with 46.3%, while Vice President Binay got
44.6%.
Concerning
stewardship
as the eight quality, Senator Poe was the respondents’ choice at 65.3%,
followed by Senator Santiago with 51.3%, Mayor Duterte with 40.3%, Secretary
Roxas with 38.4% and Vice President Binay with 31%.
On
commitment
to the growth of the people as the ninth quality, Senator Poe was also
the most favored according to the 53.5% of the respondents, while Senator
Santiago received 50.6%, followed by Mayor Duterte at 44.1%, Secretary Roxas
with 39.1% and Vice President Binay with 25.3% on the last spot.
The
last quality which focuses on building
community (the capacity to unite various institutions of the society to
collaborate in problem solving), Senator Poe was chosen by majority of the
respondents at 52.8%, while Secretary Roxas garnered 39.4%, followed by Vice
President Binay at 39.3%, while Senator Defensor-Santiago acquired 37.4%. Mayor
Duterte obtained 36.8%, who has been under fire for his remarks about the rape
and killing of 36-year-old Australian Jacqueline Hamill.
When
all scores provided to each contender per servant leadership quality were
averaged, the survey confirmed that the respondents regarded the rivals as
possessing these attributes: awareness (61%); listening (56%);
conceptualization (53%); empathy (51%) and foresight (50%). Acquiring less than 50 percent of the average
percentage, respondents sensed that rivals have lack of persuasion (45%);
stewardship (45%); commitment to growth (43%); building community (41%) and
healing (34%).
Manila
Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo who
chairs the Commission on the Laity of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the
Philippines[5] stressed that
the results of the survey were not being endorsed by the Catholic Church,
saying that these candidates were neither ranked by the Church nor the survey
did ask priests and nuns but ordinary people based on their perception, to help
Filipino voters examine the candidates in many aspects before the May 9 polls.[6] That this was
initiated not to impose, as respect to each other's
conscience, but to give guidance, and appeal to the public to look at the
perspective, rather than the speaker. What bothers him more is not the Duterte
presidency, but the standpoint of many people: that an evil deed can curb an
equally evil action.
Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Rev. Teodoro Bacani,
who is also a member of the 1986 Constitutional Commission, said Filipinos
should scrutinize the leaders that they hurl into power, what kind of person
are they when seeing and hearing about them, and ensure that this person is
Godly and stands by his or her principles.
