Ecclesiastes 4:7-8 Again I found this vanity under the sun: a solitary man with no companion; with
neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his toil, and riches do not
satisfy his greed. "For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good
things?" This also is vanity and a worthless task.
It sounds funny but every time that there IS a
calamity that a community/city/country faces, the usual reaction of people especially
the Christians is to ascribe the incidence as God’s punishment.
God is not the culprit of the wildfire that happens
in California which death toll rises to 70 people and destroys 5,700 homes, but
the community themselves who respond to Satan allurement on riches bringing the
world’s industries to exhaust the natural resources resulting to disproportionate
emission of carbon dioxide which causes global warming and thereby causes
destructive wildfires
According to the reports, California wildfire death toll climbs to 40 amidst a
100-mile wide cluster of raging fire and 100,000 evacuated and 5,700 homes and
businesses were destroyed,[1] while more than 200 people
have been reported missing since the fires began.[2]
10,000 firefighters were deployed who have made progress
combatting the
A firefighting force of more than 10,000 has made
progress battling the inferno but strong winds could generate new difficulties.
16 wildfires have burned more than 214,000 acres
throughout California, which rapidly spread once any new fires start. This calamity is identified as one of the greatest disaster ever
faced by the Californians.
Global warming causes more devastating wildfires
According to a report, global warming may be attributed
to increasingly destructive wildfires in the Western United States.[3]
Scientists discover that lengthier and ferocious
wildfire seasons since 1986 are closely linked with warmer summer temperatures,
the earlier arrival of spring, and earlier snowmelts in the West.
With the multi, million dollar that huge industries
(which emit excessive carbon dioxide resulting to global warming) have been
reaping, aside from properties damage that
the wildfires have wreaked , it cost states and the federal government millions
in fire-suppression management which have exceeded $1 billion dollars at least
twice since Fiscal Year 2000.[4]
Nature’s reminder
St. Gregory the Great identifies avarice as one of
the capital sins (along with pride, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or
acedia) – Catechism of the Catholic Church CCC 1866 – as they engender other
sins, other vices. Because of unwarranted
desire for so much money, industries are tempted to deplete the natural resources
uncontrollably which strengthens global warming and thus cause wildfires.
The global temperature is intensifying and the
climate is changing brought by the greenhouse-gas emissions that the earth’s
industries have already produced, resulting to a likely increase in wildfires
occurrence.
Again, the nature’s speaks to the people to engage
in moderation efforts by taking steps on reducing our impact on the climate than
greed, along with creating buffer zones between human habitation and prone forests,
and meeting home and city fire-safety standards.
