Catholics
have acquired images of our Lord Jesus Christ specially sketched by the first
Catholics since the first century between 100 – 400AD) which was found in the
cave where they had kept it.
Aside
from these paintings of the ancient Catholics, the Church also preserved the
linen used to wrap the corpse of our Lord Jesus in 33AD, bearing His image.
While
non-Catholics argue the authenticity of the Shroud backing it up with the
passage found in the book of John, which states:
They took the body of Jesus and bound it with
burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. (John 19:40)
Please
note that the particular passage mentioned does not actually specify 2 pieces
as the exact number of clothes – the stipulation based on the passage quoted
was
1). LINEN CLOTHES LYING THERE (pls. take note of its plural form which can
be possible that it is more than one), and the
2). separate cloth (a separate
cloth aside from the first mentioned). Thus, it’s more likely that it’s more
than 2 or 3 or even more.
Naturally,
that could be more clothes which is COMMON SENSE because anyone could never
clean Jesus’ body thoroughly from its excessive bloods by a single cloth alone,
given the barbaric execution that He had gone through. Hence, it’s noticeable in
John 19: 40 that it speaks
of a plural form of clothes: They (Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus) took
the body of Jesus and bound it with BURIAL CLOTHES along with the spices,
according to the Jewish burial custom.
But this happened before the final wrapping of Jesus’ body. Definitely, out of reverence, Joseph of
Arimathea & Nicodemus would not use the same clothes they used on cleaning
Jesus’s body after they removed it from the cross, in the burial rights. Logically, they
would use another UNSTAINED CLOTH as in the Shroud which is a long strip of
cloth, wrapped underneath the body, then over his head and down to His feet,
which parallels with that of (Matthew 27:59)(Taking
the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen (SINGULAR).
Therefore,
non-Catholics’ contention with respect to the NUMBER OF CLOTHES is flawed.
Above all, although we believe that
the Shroud is the actual burial cloth of the Lord, our faith is not centered on
this piece of cloth as it’s not a matter of faith given that as it’s not Christ
but simply the cloth used in His burial. It’s something that brings humanity
back to Him. Salvation is not in the Shroud,
even if it truly draped the martyred body of Jesus, even if it was mysteriously
given by God to His Church. Salvation is
that which is given to everybody by JESUS and not by the SHROUD.
