He battled to stay sober for years, but lost his fight when he died in early 2014 from combined drug intoxication, including heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, and benzodiazepines despite being in recovery for more than two decades. Reports indicated that he had slipped back into prescription opioids and, ultimately, relapsed with heroin.
