She was a regular user of barbituates and alcohol whose death in 1962 was controversially ruled an accidental overdose.
No trace of any drugs in her stomach could be shown in an autopsy but did show a purplish discoloration of the colon. Toxicology studies found a massive amount of pentobarbital and chloral hydrate in her body. It was insinuated that the purple colon was a sign of an inflammatory response to barbiturates, possibly administered by enema.

She suffered with anorexia and a related cocaine addiction that led her to rehab. The Olsen twins have since designed a $55,000 handbag which features black patent leather Nile crocodile skin adorned with multicolored prescription pills

He has had his share of legal troubles due to alcohol abuse and once said in an interview with Diane Sawyer that he was drinking five pints of beer for breakfast during the filming of Lethal Weapon 2.
His life began to publically disentangle after a 2006 DUI arrest in California. With a blood-alcohol level of 0.12-percent (California's legal limit is 0.08-percent), he was reported to have made reproachful remarks against Jewish people and women. He later apologized for his comments and entered an alcohol abuse rehab clinic which lasted for three months.

He confessed to Howard Stern in 2013 that he had turned to alcohol to help him cope with his 1991 Parkinson's diagnosis. The actor said he attended therapy to get clarity and no longer uses alcohol to self-medicate.
